Goeree-Overflakkee (30 minutes South/Zuid van Rotterdam
Krijn Heerschap had me al een paar keer uitgenodigd voor een toerrit over "zijn" eiland Goeree-Overflakkee. Ondanks het koude weer was het vandaag dan zover. Zowel Krijn als ik rijden ook in de winter door. Goede kleding, je verstand gebruiken en genieten van een mooie rit door een winters landschap.
We vertrokken na de middag voor een rit ,die ongeveer twee uur zou duren, in westelijke richting.
De eerste foto is genomen in het mooie oude dorp Goedereede, waar naar ik begreep Krijn zijn jeugd heeft doorgebracht. Zijn mooie oude Enfield pastte prachtig bij de stijlvolle oude gebouwen. Het geluid van deze motor is prachtig. Een mooie ouderwetse roffel. Die machine praat tegen je!
De tweede foto is bij het haventje van Ouddorp. Twee oude machines en twee doorgewinterde motorrijders. Bedankt voor een prachtige middag, Krijn!

That is an area about 30 minutes drive South of Rotterdam near the North Sea coast. Although it was quite cold today this was the day. We both continu riding even in winter time. Good clothing, use your common sense and out to enjoy the beautiful winter landscape to the full.
We were off just after noon for a ride of around two hours, heading West.
The first photo was taken in the ancient village of Goedereede. This was where Krijn was born and raised. His beautiful old Enfield was at his best with these old buildings as background. The exhaust rumble of the engine is very nice. This machine talks to you.

Toeren langs - Touring along de Vliet
11Het was een wat saaie zondag en ik besloot een toertje in de directe omgeving te maken. Gewapend met een oude verrekijker, die ik eens wou uitproberen, reed ik eerst naar de uitkijktoren bij de vogelplas in de Oostvlietpolder. Die kijker bleek niet bijzonder nuttig maar het uitzicht op zich was geweldig. Daarna besloot ik maar eens de Vliet te volgen in zuidelijke richting.
De Vliet is een gracht die in het jaar 47 door de Romeinse veldheer Corbulo werd gegraven.
Het loopt van Leiden naar Delft. Aan de mooie oevers vindt je prachtige landhuizen en de oude hefbruggen zijn een lust voor het oog.
Vlak bij de sluisjes van Leidschendam ligt de oude, prachtig gerestaureerde houtzaagmolen "De Salamander" (Zie de foto)

It was a rather dull Sunday and so I went for a small touring trip on my own. With an old pair of binoculars, that I wanted to try, I first went to the bird observation tower at the lake in the Oostvlietpolder. The binoculars were not of much use, but the view from the tower was fantastic. After some time I decided to take the road along the Vliet canal to the South.
That "De Vliet" canal was made in the year 47 by Roman lord Corbulo.
It connects the cities of Leiden and Delft. On its beautiful borders one finds old estates and houses and the old bridges are a joy for the eye too. There is so much history here.
Near the locks of the city of Leidschendam the old fully restored sawmill "De Salamander" is located. See the picture I made.

Betuwe Trip
1Vorige woensdag maakten de motorfiets enthusiasten van mijn buro onder leiding van collega Laszlo (hier aan het uitleggen bij een van de vele bezienswaardigheden) een werkelijke schitterende rit in de Betuwe. Hoogtepunten waren de Heerlijkheid Marienwaerdt34, het oude kerkje in Tricht (met orgelspel door Laszlo).het oude vestingstadje Buren en de verschillende prachtige weggetjes langs de oevers van de Linge. De motorfietsen waren 4 Harley's en twee Yamaha's.
De dag werd afgesloten door een alleszins betaalbaar en lekker etentje in het Trichtse restaurant "Appels en Peren36".

Hortus botanicus in Leiden, NL
Afgelopen zondag voerde me met zoon Dave per motorfiets naar de Hortus botanicus in Leiden. Het was heerlijk weer en wat is dat een prachtige tuin. Daar ga ik beslist nog eens heen
Dave had het grootste plezier in het maken van foto's en de kleine Canon digitale camera hielp hem mee deze foto te maken.

Mijn vriend - my friend
Vorig jaar - na mijn tweede achillespees-blessure - verkocht ik mijn wedstrijdmotor en kocht ik deze 20 jaar oude Yamaha toermotor. Een jaar is bijna voorbij en afgezien van wat normaal onderhoud heeft de machine me overal zonder enig probleem heen gebracht. Het is ook een motor die me past als een handschoen. Complimenten voor de mensen van Yamaha!
Gisteravond ben ik naar de rivier de Amstel gegaan. Het is de weg naar mijn neef Rocco. Ik heb al vaker op de terugweg genoten van de prachtige zonsondergang daar. Nu ben ik maar eens op weg gegaan op foto's te schieten. Het was er prachtig. Zelfs toen ik besloot om weer naar huis te gaan ben ik nog weer gestopt om nog meer foto's te maken.
Hier is er eentje. Niet de mooiste, maar wel de mooiste met die Yahama erop. Dat heeft die machine verdiend.
Last year - after I ripped the other heel tendon too - I sold my competition motorcycle and bought this old Yamaha touring bike. A year has almost passed since. Apart from the need to do some regular maintenaince the bike has taken me everywhere without trouble. It also is a bike that suits me just fine.Thanks Yamaha!
Yesterday evening I made a trip to the Amstel river. It is the road I take to my cousin Rocco. On the way back I admired the beautiful sunsets from that road so much. This time I went to shoot a few photo's. Het was beautiful indeed that evening. Even after I left for home I stopped again to shoot another set of photo's.
Here is one. Not the best one, but the best one with the Yamaha on it. As a tribute to a great bike.

Typhoon Lagoon & Outback Steak House
Op donderdag zijn we naar Disney's Typhoon Lagoon gegaan. Na wat nadenken besloten we niet te overnachten. Volgens Mapquest was het een rit van 3:14 uur van zo'n 213 mijl.
Een stevige rit dus, maar de Chevrolet had er met de cruise control weinig moeite mee.
Typhoon Lagoon was een heerlijk park. Vooral de grote surf pool en de lazy river vielen erg in de smaak. Laat in de middag begon het weer te regenen. Maar dat is hier warm water en nat waren we toch al, dus wat maakt dat dan uit.
Op de terugweg schoven we vlak voor Tampa een Outback Steakhouse binnen voor een dineetje Amerikaanse stijl. Dat was de eerste kennismaking met een Blooming Onion en met Buffalo Wings. Dan natuurlijk de bekende steaks met frietjes en spare ribs voor Astrid. Dave nam een cheeseburger, maar die kaas hier is niet helemaal zijn smaak.
Een fantastische dag alles bij elkaar. Toen we thuis waren was het binnen het halfuur heel stil. We waren echt moe, maar heel voldaan.

Quite a distance, but the Chevrolet and the cruise control had little trouble with it.
Typhoon Lagoon was a wonderful park. Especially the big Surf Pool and the Lazy River were in big demand. Late in the afternoon it started to rain. But that is warm water here and wet we were anyhow, so who cares?
On the way back home near Tampa we went to have dinner at a Outback Steakhouse. That was the first time my family had a Blooming Onion and Buffalo Wings. Then of course steaks with fries and ribs for Astrid. Dave had a cheeseburger, but he did not like the cheese here much though.
All in all it was a great day!

Naples Florida

Dit jaar ben ik met het hele gezin naar Naples Florida getrokken. Ik moet daar werken en ondertussen kunnen de anderen lekker vakantie vieren.
De ietwat lastig zelf in elkaar geflanste vliegreis verliep dankzij het attente KLM personeel voortreffelijk en zo stonden we dan op het vliegveld van Fort Myers met een viertal dikke koffers. Op naar de huurauto-balie waar de mevrouw me vroeg of ik écht zo'n kleine auto wou. Ja, zei ik met een stalen gezicht. En inderdaad, de Chevrolet was stukken groter dan mijn VW Polo en met wat puzzelen kregen we ook in ééń keer de vier koffers erin.
Met een halfuurtje rijden waren we bij het gehuurde huis1 nadat de portier ons als aangemelde huurders had teruggevonden in zijn stukken. Wat een prachtig huis! Meer dan we ooit hadden durven denken. Ik kreeg het voor elkaar binnen het uur iets stoms te doen met de alarminstallatie en had prompt de sheriff aan de deur, die maar even polshoogte kwam nemen.
De maandag namen we er ons gemak van na de lange vliegreis. Even een handig simpel kaartje ophalen uit een promotiegidsje in een hotel, langs een supermarkt voor eten en toen maar eens lunchen bij het aanbevolen Jason's Deli2. Dat was de eerste keer dat mijn gezinnetje te maken kreeg met Amerikaanse porties. 's Avonds derhalve enigszins geschokt maar rustig aan gedaan met eten.
Dinsdagochtend vertrokken we naar de Everglades voor een trip met zo'n airboat3. Ze vonden het gewéldig! Voor mij was het de tweede keer, maar ik vond het ook weer een feest.
Daarna gingen we naar Tin City voor wat winkelen en de lunch terwijl het echt hoosde. Alleen regent het hier dan warm water en dat is helemaal niet erg.

This year I left for Naples Florida to work, taking the family with me. While I work they can then enjoy a wonderful vacation.
The somewhat complicated arranged flights were a smooth affaire thanks to the KLM staff keeping a close eye on it all and so we arrived at Fort Myer with four big suitcases.At the rental car desk the lady asked whether I really wanted such a small cars. I said yes with a straight face... The Chevrolet I got was a lot bigger than my VW Polo at home and after some time we managed to squeeze in the four suitcases too!
We arrived at the rented house5 in 30 minutes after the guard found us back as guests in his system. What a beautiful house. Way beyond our wildest expectations indeed. I managed to do something not so smart with the alarm and had a sheriff knocking at our door in the first hour after arrival who had decided to check just to make sure.
Monday we took it easy after the long flight. Got a local map from a promotional magazine in a hotel, got food from a local mall and then we went for lunch at the recommended Jason's Deli6. First time for my family to enjoy generous servings American style. Dinner that evening was kept simple as a result, shocked as we still were.
Tuesday morning we left for the Everglades for a airboat trip7. They really loved it. It was my second time, but I also highly enjoyed the trip. What a power these boats have!
After the airboat trip we went to Tin City for some shopping and lunch during a real downpour. Only here the water is warm and thus it is not too bad at all.

Week in London - Covent Garden
De laatste dag voor de trip naar huis (500+ kilometer) bezochten we Covent Garden. Wat een geweldige plek is dat. Op een gegeven moment was een groep van zes vioolspelers zo gezellig bezig met de muziek en de toeschouwers. Het was geweldig!
On our last day before returning home ( 500+ km) we visited Covent Garden. What a wonderful place. At one time a group of six musicans was really making a big show with the music and involving the onlookers. It was terrific in any way!

Week in London - Bike Chick
Op de tweede dag nam ik eerst tante Dana mee voor een klein ritje. Op haar vijftiende reed ze op een scooter en weer een keertje achterop was haar grote wens. Ze vond het prachtig. Dat we de wisseling van de wacht bij Buckingham Palace dan een dagje moesten opschuiven was het ons beslist waard.
On our second day I took niece Dana for a small tour. She remember the ride from her 15th and having a new ride was her big wish. She enjoyed it so much. That thus Changing the Guard had to wait for the next day was worth it all!

Week in London - Bus
Astrid en ik gingen een weekje naar Londen. De eerste dag gingen we naar het Tate Britain museum en daarna maakten we een mooie rit met de fameuze dubbeldekker. Hier passeren we Charing Cross station.

Route rol
Afgelopen zaterdag voor het eerst in jaren weer eens meegedaan met een georganiseerde toerrit, ditmaal van Motorclub Zoetermeer.
Het was een zonovergoten en goed warme dag, maar Holland liet zich ook van zijn mooiste zijde zien.
Voor de gelegenheid heb ik in de fietsenwinkel een routerol gekocht en provisorisch aangepast voor op de motor. Dat beviel heel prima en lijkt me ook erg handig voor wat langere ritten op basis van een geplande route van een van de bekende websites.
Last Saturday I participated for the first time in years with a touring trip organised this time by local Motorclub Zoetermeer.
It turned to be a very sunny and hot day, but Holland was very beautiful too.
For the occasion I got my self one of these little devices to roll the directions sheet on in a bicycle shop and fitted it to the bike with rubber bands as a temporarily solution. That route roll device was a great tool and it seems to me very handy to use with one of the planned routes from sites as Mapquest, TheAA.com and the likes.

Print and Web - Jos Vecht
Even een heel ander bericht dan gebruikelijk. Eigenlijk gewoon misbruik van mijn blog, maar het doel heiligt de middelen.
Mijn broer Jos had de enorme pech dat zijn oude werkgever de complete groep vormgevers de deur uit deed in een poging tot kostenreductie. Dat deden ze op een ronduit onbeschofte wijze trouwens.
Dat liet Jos niet over zijn kant gaan en inmiddels is hij een eigen bedrijf begonnen na in de afgelopen periode al de nodige freelance opdrachten te hebben uitgevoerd.

My brother Jos was very unlucky to see his former employer dumping the entire group of dtp designers as a costreduction effort. In a highly improper way, by the way.

Mijn broer Jos had de enorme pech dat zijn oude werkgever de complete groep vormgevers de deur uit deed in een poging tot kostenreductie. Dat deden ze op een ronduit onbeschofte wijze trouwens.
Dat liet Jos niet over zijn kant gaan en inmiddels is hij een eigen bedrijf begonnen na in de afgelopen periode al de nodige freelance opdrachten te hebben uitgevoerd.

Reisdoel vandaag was deze plaats als het centrum van de Everglades.
Airboat City zou een betere naam zijn, want je kan hier in dit kleine plaatsje overal een tripje boeken.
Alles draait hier op water en vaartuigen, dat was wel snel duidelijk.
De meeste huizen zijn als carports gebouwd. Beneden staat de auto en is er opslagruimte. Boven is het leefgedeelte.

Op de terugweg ben ik vervolgens eens lekker gaan rondkijken in één van die mooie malls bij OfficeMax. Ik vond een puike Targus rugzak met een laptop-vak. Die heb ik maar gekocht voor de dagelijkse wandeling naar kantoor zodat Astrid haar Eastpak rugzak weer kan gebruiken.

On the way back I stopped at one of these nice malls and checked out the OfficeMax store. I bought a nice Targus backpack with a padded laptop section. Great to put all my things in on the daily walk to the office and my daughter can take her Eastpak backpack again that I used up to now..

Midden in het moeras - Corkscrew Swamp Bird Sanctuary

Ik heb vandaag een bezoek gebracht aan het Corkscrew Swamp Bird Sanctuary park. Dat is een park midden in het moeras ten NO van Naples én een heel bekend vogelreservaat.
De wandeling door het moerasbos was prachtig over het verhoogde pad. Midden het het bos bij een kleine vijver kwam ik een hele groep enthousiaste toeschouwers tegen en twee mensen met van die geweldige camera's met joekels van telelenzen.
Er was daar van alles te zien aan wild: baby alligators, ibissen, een valk die achter een ibis aanging, een raccoon. Ongelooflijk! Dat krijg je normaal alleen op de TV te zien en hier is het echt. Het ene beest loerde op het andere voor het avondeten, dat was ook wel heel helder.

The walk through the swamp over the boardwalk was wonderful. In the middle of the swamp I met a group of enthusiast people near a small pond and two guys with those huge telelenses, tripods and all.
There was so much to see: baby alligators, ibisses, falcons and even a raccoon showed up. Things a city guy like me only sees on the TV and here it was - all real. It was clear too they all were eying each other for their dinner that day.

Zonsondergang - Sunset in Naples
Een van de werkelijk fascinerende dingen hier in Naples, Florida zijn de avonden en de zon in de zee zien zakken op het strand aan de Golf van Mexico.
One of the truly wonderful things here in Naples Florida are the evenings and that sun sinking in the Gulf.

Florida langs de kust - along the coast
Deze zaterdag heb ik maar eens een mooi ritje gemaakt langs de kust van de Golf van Mexico naar het noorden, naar Fort Myers. Dan landinwaarts en terug over Immokalee naar Naples.
Die kustlijn is prachtig, maar de mooie huizen staan tot direct aan het prachtig witte zandstrand en boulevards zijn ver te zoeken. Geen plaatje dus van een leuk terrasje dit keer.
This Saturday I took off for a nice ride along the coast of the Gulf of Mexico to the North, to Fort Myers. Then I went East for a while to return to Naples through the small city of Immokalee.
That coast is beautiful, but the very nice houses are built right on the edge of the beach and I could not find any nice places to park the bike and sit for a while. No shots of me on the beachside this time.

Drijf tot op het hemd- Soaked in Florida!
Het weekeinde begon goed - grinnik -
Met die hitte hier regende het wel warm water, dus vervelend werd het nou ook weer niet. Metgezel Jeff Armstrong van HD reed onverdroten door en ik er achteraan. Ik was toch al drijf. De HD V-Rod hield zich onberispelijk en bleek ook toen het fors begon te waaien een heel erg handelbare machine.
Het geleende speciale "Warm Weer" open mesh Fieldsheer jack hield uiteraard geen enkele druppel tegen (maar ook niet vast). Nou was ik al zo wijs geweest mijn papieren in plastic te verpakken, dus dat ging goed. Minder was het met de Amerikaanse chopperstijl motorlaarzen. Die hadden wel een paar afvoerpijpen kunnen gebruiken en ik sopte naar mijn idee erg hoorbaar het hotel in.
Ik had het toch niet willen missen, dit ritje!
The weekend started really well
Here it does not get really cold like back home, so it was not a nasty situation. Fellow rider up front Jeff Armstrong just pressed on and I followed. I was already soaked, so why bother to search for shelter, right? The HD V-Rod did not miss a beat and when the wind picked up too it turned out to be a very well handling bike indeed.
The special "hot weather" open mesh Fieldsheer jacket did not stop a single drop of water (but it did not kind of hold it either). I luckily had taken the precaution to wrap my papers in plastic. Less suitable were the American chopper style boots. A drain hole here or there would have been useful as I had the feeling all in that hotel lobby could hear these boots were really soaked as I walked to the elevator.
Even though a ride I certainly enjoyed!

Reizen met - Travelling with an iPod Nano
Ik had al een MP3 spelertje als kameraadje voor de lange intercontinentale vluchten.
Mijn belangrijkste reden om die iPod te willen is dat ik op mijn huidige MP3 spelertje niet voldoende ruimte had om wat verschillende smaken muziek en de verzameling nog te beluisteren podcasts kwijt te kunnen voor een stel lange vliegreizen en langere klussen in het buitenland. Na twee weken Dixieland Jazz heb ik dat genre ook wel weer meer dan voldoende gehoord, nietwaar?
Ik had al eens een normale iPod in handen gehad en vandaar mijn belangstelling. De Nano heeft met 4 GB niet de ruimte van zo'n grote iPod, maar in ruil daarvoor is die Nano wel een buitengewoon handig ding in je borstzakje.
Inmiddels ben ik erachter dat die iPod wel heel wat meer in zijn mars heeft dan de alom voor een habbekrats te krijgen MP3 speler en daarmee zijn buitengewoon stevige prijs in mijn ogen meer dan compenseert.
De bediening met dat wieltje is gewoon fantastisch, iTunes een heerlijk programma om het allemaal te beheren en de iPod bij te werken, maar dan daarnaast:

My main reason for wanting that iPod was that the space on that 286 MB MP3 player was not big enough for some different genres of music plus a collection of podcasts I had collected to listen to. After two weeks only Dixieland Jazz one has had enough of that, right?
I had some experience with a normal iPod and hence my interest. That Nano does not have the same space as the big ones, but these tiny iPods are really handy to take with you when travelling.
To my surprise those iPods have a lot more functionality than simple MP3 players and that sure more than makes up for the stiff price!
Navigation with the clickwheel is great, iTunes a great piece of software to manage it all, but on top of it all:

- kan je notities in tekstformaat kwijt en heb ik daarvan inmiddels handig gebruik gemaakt voor een simpel routeplannertje. OK, je kan het ook op een papiertje printen of schrijven, maar de Nano heeft wel een kristalhelder verlicht schermpje en een scroll functie!
- kan je die notities in tekstformaat ook gebruiken om het laatste nieuws automatisch van Internet te plukken en naar je iPod te kopieren. Ik vond een reuze handig programmaatje "GoogleGet", dat het nieuws en weer van Google News vist. Het werd helaas niet meer onderhouden, maar met een redelijk simpel macrootje in Word 2003 heb ik vrijwel hetzelfde bereikt, alleen ietsie minder verfijnd. Ideaal, want tijdens het taxiritje naar het werk kijk ik lekker even het laatste Nederlandse en buitenlandse nieuws na. Verder heb ik ook nog het weerbericht, dus als er iemand vraagt wat voor weer het in Nederland is kan ik dat ook ophoesten
- zit er een klok op, die je voor verschillende plaatsen op de aardbol apart kan aanmaken
- en tenslotte kan je contactgegevens kwijt in Vcard formaat en daarmee eventueel heel mijn verzameling visitekaartjes meenemen. Ook dat bleek op deze reis al handig, want ik heb hier in Japan VOIPBuster geinstalleerd om gratis mee naar Nederland te bellen vanaf de laptop en dus had ik nummertjes nodig. En die zitten dus in, jawel, die iPod..

- can it hold photos in case you want to show someone the obligatory photos of family or whatever else.
- can you store a iCal calender with warnings and all. That calender can be maintained in Firefox or Thunderbird and copied to the iPod, it really is simple.
- there is a place for notes in textformat. Handy trick is to copy the text form one of those routeplanning sites. You could print it too, but the iPod has a crystal clear well-lit screen
- can those notes be used to automatically pull the latest news and weather forecast from Internet and copy to the iPod. I found a small application, called "GoogleGet" that does just that, getting it all from Google News. Unfortunately it is no longer being maintained and the weather option is broken. I managed to get almost the same functionality through a Word 2003 macro though, just not that sophisticated. Great stuff, I can check latest Dutch and foreign news and weather forecast in the taxi on my way to work.
- it holds multiple clocks so you can easily check what time it is elsewhere on the globe.
- and last but not least you can put all your contacts in it in VCard format. That too proved most worthwhile as I installed VOIPBuster here in Japan as it allows me to call any landline in Holland free of charge from the laptop. So I needed the phonenumber of family, which - yes - where all on the little iPod.
All in all, a great travel companion!!

Abruzzo
Ik mocht weer eens naar Abruzzo, Italïe. Deze reis voert me eerst per vliegtuig over de Alpen naar Rome. Met een beetje geluk heb ik dan een prachtig uitzicht over het berglandschap.
Op het vliegveld van Fuimocino wordt ik afgehaald door Ciro, de vaste taxi-chauffeur van de fabriek. Het is een uur of drie stevig doorrijden door een prachtig berglandschap dwars door de "laars" van Italïe naar de Adriatische kust.
Abruzzo is een prachtige streek met heerlijke wijnen, de Montepulciano. Mijn hotel ligt in Lanciano, een kustplaats en dus een uitgelezen plek voor heerlijke visschotels.
Het waren alles bij elkaar maar drie dagen en relatief erg veel reizen, maar toch zeker weer de moeite waard. Op de terugreis wist ik ook nog net een vlucht eerder naar huis te pakken. Het was het allerlaatste stoeltje op een bomvolle vlucht!

I had to go to Abruzzo, Italy once more. This trip takes me by plane to Rome first. With some luck it will offer me some beautiful views over the Swiss Alps from the plane.
At the Fiumocino Airport I will be met by Ciro, the taxi-driver of choice of the factory, and then it is about a three hours drive amidst beautiful mountains straight across Italy to the Adriatic coast.
Abruzzo is a wonderful region with great wines, the Montepulciano. The hotel is located in Lanciano on the coast and thus it is just the place to be if you like fish food.
The trip was only three days and most of it was travelling, but it sure was worth while. On the way back I managed to take an earlier flight too. The very last free seat in that plane, lucky me..
