I went skating this afternoon. The weather was fantastic. The ice on the canals and lakes was thick, safe and smooth. Best place here is lake Rottemeren. That lake is situated between Zoetermeer and Rotterdam. But there was a organized trip taking place. That was a busy place for sure.
Friends told me that there was a nice stretch near the three old windmills direction of Leidschendam. My son was not willing to join me in any way.
So I went alone. Parking my car there was no problem. When I saw the three old windmills in all glory in the beautiful winter sunny light and all the skaters there I thought only one thing: how very beautiful! The ice was just perfect. It took me a lot of effort to put on the skates. But I got it done. Good exercise! After taking a deep breath I managed to get up and on the skates.
It was not easy, those first few meters. I knew that already from the ice rink. But I was not alone in this. Much more skaters were on the ice for the first time after 10 or more years. That did not go unnoticed, especially if someone was about to loose control. "Up to the third mill" I decided. I made that quite well. OK, back then. The old skill was slowly coming back.
Once back at the first mill I decided to shoot a few pictures. I had my small camera with me. Taking the big one I decided against. Too risky. There was a lady taking pictures from her kids with a very nice camera. Not on skates by the way. I asked her to take my camera to do a few shots of me in front of the windmill. That is the picture you see here.
Up and down the wind mills again, I decided. That went OK, but I got tired too. There was some grass frozen in the ice. I did not go down, but it sure was "exciting".
Time to go home. I love that skating!
